Start of something a little new…

Well some of you may, or may not know I guess, that after a lengthy period of service, Len has handed over the website….I, Andrew Smith (not that Andy Smith), have taken over the BCC website. With it, I am hoping to do something a little new, and this blog is one part of that something new…

Len has done a great job with the website, and I hope to carry forward all his hard work and efforts. However, unlike Len, I will need a little more help from you guys, the members, the people that make up BCC. (Students you have nuff time to get involved!)

So what’s needed…..Guess what, I have a list below … (happy smiley)

  1. Contributors to this blog
  2. Ideas and thoughts for the new website
  3. People to review the new website once up and running
  4. People to write match reports and fill in a score card on the website

So in a little more detail…

Contributors

If you fancy posting up news, events, little stories and anecdotes then get in touch. I will grant you access to the admin area of this blog and you can post something yourself. However, we don’t want silly stories, though of course, a post on Joe Parsons being sick in a cab on the way to Bas Vegas would have been great .

Match reviews would also be good on the blog, however, there will also be a section on the new website (once live) that will allow these to be posted.

In addition, a Blog only really works if people get involved. So once you see a post, have a read guys and girls, and leave your thoughts and comments. No doubt this will get a little lively, and those who have admin rights may have to vet some of the comments being posted….I hope not though…

Ideas and thoughts on the new website

I have lots of my own, but who knows, I probably have missed something. So any ideas and thoughts on the new website will be greatly appreciated. Please note, getting the website up and live is down to time for me, so it’s not going to be sky sports, well not just yet.

Review new website

Before it goes live, I will need some people to test the website and have a play, just to ensure they are happy with the way it runs, looks and feels (also that there aren’t any blatant errors)

People to write match reports

On the new website, I have plans that we can capture a quick match report (doesn’t have to be a novel) on each of the games played, including Sundays and Colts (if possible). In addition, I hope to be able to provide us with a facility to capture the score card for each game and some pictures. The score card will come in useful for player profiles and stats. Pictures, well they are just some fun aren’t they…So from each team I will need a volunteer to make this happen (captains are obvious choices, but I know that could be asking a lot).

So that’s all for now…Keep your eyes posted for new posts, and I hope to hear back from you very soon…

Comments
  1. Oh first comment, the current blog theme is just for now, I hope to get something a little more BCC together very soon

  2. CJ says:

Great stuff Andy. Just positing this because I can not because I have anything interesting to say at this point!!

  3. 124 views in a couple of hours going live…not bad, seems a lot of people interested in BCC….

  4. Len Dicks says:

It’s a great start.. Just what bthe BCC Members need. Let’s make good use of it ….

  5. Tony Brown says:

Well done Andy…..just what the Club needs to bring it into the 21st century and provide a platform for former players and friends of the Club to keep in touch on-line.
Just a small point …….I haven’t seen much in the local press during the season about the Club and the weekly team results. In particular in the Billericay and Brentwood Gazette and Yellow Advertiser, to name a couple of local papers. Is it possible for the “press” officer, if we still have one, to send them a brief resume of our results if only for the 1sts and 2nds over the weekends. Maybe I missed the results in other the other local newspapers.
One other small item, which other members may have noticed under Categories is “Payers”. Should this be Players !!
However, once again..well done and good luck for the future…Keep Blogging !!!

    • Thanks Tony…

I am not sure about the club in the local press, I guess that is something that can get raised at the AGM. Hopefully, if I can get people to interact and update the up and coming new website, getting together content to send to the local press should be a lot easier.

Good spot, I will change payer to player :)

  6. So far I have only been contacted by one additional member regarding the new website, since this post went up….I am currently finishing off some of the design phase, so any input on what people would like to see on the new website needs to be in very very shortly….

Would be nice for more people to get involved….

  7. Just to let everyone know, the website has been transferred to my companies hosting servers. The current website is still up and being used, but will be replaced very shortly. The new website will start off very basic, but more and more information and functionality will be added in the run up to the 2011 season….

  8. Greg Hammond says:

    Andrew,

Sterling effort for you to take the project on. I just didn’t have the knowledge or the tools to play with Len’s creation. Eventually nor the time and support. Then my computer lost all the files so I know it can be a lonely place sometimes and you will definitely rely on people’s input to keep the site up to date. I have not been introduced yet but we will have to have a beer some time!

My suggestions for the site… I spent a lot of time looking at what other clubs do and hve some of my own ideas… as for the look that is down to perception but not too much clutter in the background…

Ideas for sections within the site:

    Forum
Photo section (with the phone gadgets these day I am sure Iphones etc can generate some good pics)
    Player Profiles
    Fixtures
    Results
    Colts Section
Advertising/Sponsors – we can generate a fair few bob from this.
    Newspaper Clippings section maybe?
    Archive section
    News Page

AND in today’s day and age maybe a blog section although this could be tied in with the forum… no need for both perhaps… where people write their views on what has been and gone.

If the site is supported then competitions… captions section etc.

That is me for now off the top of my head… I look forward to seeing the site.

  9. Len Dicks says:

Basically the sections suggested by Greg were already incorporated in the existing Web Site but the problem was geting information to relate. The EMC was reluctant in providing any Club information and, alkthough a Colts Section was created, at the behest of Stewart Rutland, none of the promised information was put forward.
The importance of the Web Site is to relate information, regularly, on all Club matters ……

  10. Len Dicks says:

…. also the section about newscaper clippings. The only way local newspapers feature the Club is if the Club provides article content for publication. Unfortunately that is not happening.

    • HI Len,

I have this all under control…Some of the sections Greg mentions (such as Profiles etc) are pretty lengthy implementations, and will rely on the website being updated after each match. But thats a great thing, I am hopefull that we can get that to happen….

Re local press. The website will have the capabilities to contact select journos regarding the results and match reports. This will streamline the communication chain which I think was simply too long and should ensure we get some coverage in the local press…

To be honest, I think the length of the communication chain is one of the big challenges, not just for the cricket club but for website owners in general. Usually communication comes to the website last, via a number of people, which is the same with the old club website. My plan is to skip out a number of these steps, so that people in the know can update the website themeseleves without the need to communicate information down a chain which ends up with it finally being put on the website….

      Fingers crossed….

  11. Len Dicks says:

    Hello Andrew
    I think you’re doing a tremendous job.
Just a bit of background ….. When I organised local press reports, over two seasons again, I had to push team captains to provide weekly match reports. These reports I had to covert into, or ensure that they were in, the required format for the local press (as requested by the, then, editor of Essex Chronicle/Billericay Gazette) before forwarding by E-Mail to him and other local press editors.. The same reports were updated on the Web Site. This worked well as it ensured that Billericay CC had a half page, in some publications, devoted to the reports of all the sides.
From what you say the new Web Site will streamline this process.
What the Club needs, which I have suggested on a number of occasions, is a PR person ensuring that information is related in an organised manner.

  12. Just to let you all know, the website is up and running. It is really just the shell / template at this point, but you can see the new look and feel

Features will be getting added in a phased approach, so keep an eye out for more and more features and functions coming soon…

  13. Jon Batson says:

Just a quick note to warn people that Ann and I get back to the uk in about a week – but mainly to compliment all the players for what is clearly an excellent start to the season.
And also (pretty please!) ensure that there are a few bottles of Rioja behind the bar.
